When you are diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis
You have been suffering from diarrhoea for a while, sometimes diarrhea is accompanied by blood, mucus, stomach ache and bloating. After an endoscopy, your M.D. will discover what is going on. You are diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. It almost sounds like a spell from Harry Potter. Unfortunately, this infection in your colon won`t disappear like magic. You are only able to suppress your complaints and suddenly you are a member of a club of 40.000 people in the Netherlands who have received the same diagnosis as you.
How do you treat UC if you do not know the causation?
You know now, that the last part of your colon has an infection and it has a name. However, the exact causation is unknown. That is the reason the treatment consists out of medicines that will help suppress the complaints and inhibits inflammation. If that is no longer effective, there is always the option of operating. The surgeon will remove the inflamed piece of the colon and you will receive a (temporary) stoma. Those are not favorable prospects. At IBD Free Life we will continue to look for the causation of your inflammation. Most often we will find it.
Why is your colon inflamed?
Ask your doctor and the answer might be that it is just a case of bad luck or an auto-immune reaction. Also known as bad luck. In the last case, it could be that your immune system thinks that your colon does not belong in your system and attacks it. If that is the case then the intestine wall is attacked by your own army. That is why the treatment consists of immune-suppressing and anti-inflammatory medication. At IBD Free Life we have a different opinion. We will almost always find the causation of UC and it is almost always in the colon itself. Of course, it is possible that your immune system is upset. But your immune system is trained in your colon, so there is obviously something going wrong there.
The most common causations for UC we have encountered at IBD Free Life are:
- A problem with the digestion enzymes
- A bacteria, parasite or Candida
- A problem with certain types of food or the quality of your nutrition
- A combination of the previously mentioned points
Hooligans in your intestines
You can compare digestive enzymes with a type of scissors that are cutting your food into tiny pieces which helps the intestine wall to absorb it. When they are done with their job the enzymes are supposed to stop cutting. If they do not, they are just like uncontrollable hooligans who will try to destroy your intestine wall when they encounter it. Usually, this will happen at the end of the entire process, in the last part of your colon.

You are not alone
Worldwide, more than 5 million people are diagnosed with IBD
Together with Crohn`s disease, UC is included in the label IBD, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Crohn`s disease and UC have a lot in common but the main difference is in location and the type of inflammations.
UC is a chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the colon and or rectum. With UC the colon is inflamed without interruptions. The symptoms of UC:
- Diarrhea, often with blood and or mucous
- Stomach ache
- Weight loss
- False urge
- Loss of appetite
It depends on the place of the infection if you are diagnosed with UC or Crohn`s. When the inflammation is expanding to the gastrointestinal tract your diagnosis will be able to change from UC to Crohn`s disease.
